Second San Diego Cleantech Initiative

Invitation to Apply
The von Liebig Center, part of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, in collaboration with the City of San Diego, San Diego State University, Clean Tech San Diego and UC San Diego’s Sustainability Solutions Institute is pleased to announce the launch of its Second San Diego Clean Tech Initiative. By leveraging the von Liebig Center’s established Proof-of-Concept Process, this initiative seeks to accelerate the commercialization of promising clean technologies for the long-term benefit of San Diego.

This program is made possible thanks to the generous support of its lead sponsors Sempra Energy, the Kaplan Family Trust and the Kauffman Foundation.

This regional, year-long program seeks to provide pre-seed funding and business mentoring services to faculty, researchers, and students that have generated inventions in solar power, wind power, hybrid electric vehicles, fuel cell technology, tidal and wave power, bio diesel, water conservation and treatment, smart grid technology, energy efficiency, and green building materials to accelerate the commercialization of these technologies.

Selected projects will be awarded up to $50,000 for proof-of-concept studies and prototype development. The von Liebig Center’s team of technology and business advisors will assist all applicants in analyzing commercial potential of their inventions, provide advice on potential commercialization pathways and assist the participants with proposal preparation and presentation to external expert judges.

About the First San Diego Cleantech Initiative: In 2008, the City of San Diego partnered with Qualcomm and UC San Diego’s William J. von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement in the commercialization of early stage clean technologies as part of its goal of fostering the development of “green enterprises.” The generous support of the City of San Diego and Qualcomm provided funding for proof-of-concept grants and business mentoring by von Liebig’s Advisors for at least one year. Three projects ranging from algae-based biofuels, thermal energy conversion and solar energy conversion were each awarded $50,000 in pre-seed awards.
